Kosharah Dunham shares about Mars Hill Day Care in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Would you watch this and pray? I posted this so you could see what another ministry is doing in Thailand. Her father, Tim Dunham planted a international church and this day care is one of the arms of the church. Tim is the Acts 29 Thailand International Director.

How does the church multiply? (part 1)
So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.
(Acts 9:31 ESV)
What would you think if I told you that you could be used of God to reach your school, place of work, family, city, state, nation and world for Christ? Would your mind immediately tell you that this is impossible as your heart beat with with some hopeful passion? Would you give me an ear...or in this case an eye?
Multiplication vs. Addition
Let's begin with the difference between addition and multiplication when it comes to evangelism. First, let us agree that anytime someone comes to faith in Christ this is awesome. However, there may be a "best" model to follow in our evangelistic plans and strategies. This is where multiplication, I believe, is a better way when it comes to discipleship and even numerical growth of the church. Let me explain. Here's two guys, Austin and Blake, who both love Jesus and want to be part of telling the world about their savior.
Austin is a guy who loves Jesus and wants to see people come to know him. He sets out every day to love people with his life and words. He makes it his goal, as far as it depends on him, that he will share the good news of Jesus each day until someone comes to faith. Austin knows that it is not within his power to save or convert anyone, but he believes that God draws men to himself primarily through gospel proclamation. Austin is also a fun-loving easy going guy that does not set out to pound people with all his insight and put them into a submission hold with his mind, but he genuinely loves them and respectfully shares the gospel with all it's bad news and all it's awesome news. He depends on the Holy Spirit to move as he obeys the commandment to preach the gospel. Over a years time, Austin only sees 100 people come to Christ. This does not discourage him because he knows that although it is his goal to share the good news of Jesus and see someone come to Christ each day does not mean that this will happen. He trusts the Lord on the days people come to Jesus and he trusts the Lord on the days they don't. After these friends, strangers and family members come to Jesus he gives them a bible and encourages them to find a good local church, be baptized and begin reading God's Word. He even calls each of them on there spiritual birthdays to check up on them and let them know that he prays for them. He sees many of them at his church and he makes a point to speak to them each time he sees them. He is close with some of them and they have good fellowship with one another.
Blake is a guy who loves Jesus and wants to see people come to know him. He sets out each day to be a light in the world and share the gospel with his live and his words. He desires to make the most of every opportunity to share the gospel as he prays for two or three guys to profess faith so he can begin teaching them one on one about how to know Gods Word, share their faith, spend quality time in encouraging fellowship, and how to pray. When someone comes to faith, his passions to share the gospel does not diminish but his additional responsibility begins to weigh on him. How can he be about sharing the gospel and give his time also training his new brothers in the faith? Yes he can do both, but thinking for himself and another is a pretty heavy load. He knows that Jesus himself was about proclaiming the good news and taught his disciples to do the same. He also wisely sees that Jesus was the Son of God and saw fit to spend time mainly with twelve guys, therefore there must be a reason for this. He sets out to have a ministry of multiplication rather than addition. At the root, he believes that in the long run if he disciples the guys he leads to the Lord, and other Christian guys that want and need training, he will reach more people with the gospel of Christ than if he led a 100 people to Christ each year hoping that they would receive training from someone else. With this said, Blake is all about the church, the body of Christ, and encourages his disciples to be active learners, servants, and protectors of the church. He does not avoid the church and do his own thing, he disciples these men in the context of a loving body of believers.
Both guys love Jesus, but Blake is taking the path of discipleship evangelism in which we see modeled by Jesus.
Math

Each year Austin see 100 people come to Christ and points them to a great church etc. Blake leads two people to Christ and begins discipling them, those disciples see the need to evangelize and disciple and they set out to do the same thing. The first year Blake sees two guys come to Jesus, then the next year those two each see two guys come to Christ...and on and on. Austin's numbers represent 100 a year and Blake's represent 2 guys coming to faith with each believer. X2 + themselves.
Year Austin Blake
1 100 2+Blake=3 guys sharing their faith
2 200 9
3 300 27
4 400 81
5 500 243 (Blake's discipling 10 guys)
6 600 729
7 700 2,187
This is to show that multiplication will always trump addition and in this case will leave new converts trained and equipped to fight the good fight of faith. This equation is somewhat misleading because most Austin's and Blake's of the world using both methods know that they are not guaranteed to see anyone come to faith each year. The point is mainly to help us see the importance of life on life discipleship and it's deeper lasting impact.
But wait!
Often in discipleship centered churches and ministries there is a heavy focus on the method of multiplication with all it's training. So many things become the main thing. It may be leadership training, theology training and many books that deal with humility all the way to being a person of vision. We seek to master the way of the Master and spend great deals of time working on our presentations and observations about the culture we live in. We have retreats for men that focus on how to be a real man, and retreat for women on how to be a real woman of faith. We unintentionally even start dressing and talking the same. In addition and multiplying ministries the main thing can become the most popular book, musician, pastor or sermon. These things are not bad in and of themselves but should not be the main thing. They should support the main thing or really...they should be about the main One.
And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied. Acts 9:31
I read and was filled with joy this past April by these words! I believe that these words of scripture and the power behind them gets overlooked often within driven disciple-making ministries. Notice I say often and not always. Deep down we know we are to depend on God but this "fearing the Lord and Holy Spirit comfort" language in not that common. You can't really draw out a neat little Math chart for this one. I read this with joy because it revealed to me where power in discipling men really comes from that results in multiplication.
What I am getting at is that there must be an underlying motivating faith factor that empowers our methods and I believe that Acts 9 gives this to us. Our methods must be about God and less about things we do to see fruit. In other words, multiplication cannot be our primary goal and drive, God himself is to be our goal, drive and passion.

Any thoughts?
1982, Sugarhill Gang, Culture and the Gospel
I have been thinking a good bit lately about culture and communication when it comes to sharing Christ with the people of Thailand. There is one thing that I am confident about in this topic....I will never be a Thai. I will be able to share the love of Jesus through my life and words, but I will never connect in a way that a Thai guy will be able to connect with his countrymen. Tonight I reminisced over just one year of my 36 years of living and after doing so I tried to imagine one of the university students I spend time with coming into that year...coming into 1982...they would be fine in a survival sense, but they would not carry with them the shared history that I have with my friends. They would be lost in so many of the conversations not due to language, but shared experiences. Even our sub-languages, quotes, and jokes would leave them out many times, but these things are extremely useful when talking to friends who know what we are saying.
I want to best understand their world in order to best communicate the gospel. By only looking at 1982 and thinking about my life during that time and how all he things of pop culture shaped me and my experiences, I am even more confident that I must depend on God and his Spirit to break through the hearts of my Thai friends with the gospel. I can know a good bit about their culture, but not like I know my own, and not like a young university Thai Christian man does. Pray for God to raise up a few Thai men at North Eastern University and Khon Khan University to reach other Thais for Christ.
I have listed out some things below that proved to me that culture is thick...and this is only from the entertainment side of things. If you were alive in 1982 and at least in the 1st grade, you will have memories and feelings come over you when you think about a few of the things I have listed below. If you were not yet born or too young in 1982 you will not react in the same way as those of us who experienced it fresh and together. It will feel old school to you...but even then...there are some shared understanding of things. Maybe I should share a list of things that were huge in Thailand in 1982, and not just big Bangkok, but in the North Eastern city of Khon Kaen. Most of the things below are just names of movies and songs but they play a major part in my culture, and this is only one year!
I remember 1982 like it was only a few years ago...not like yesterday, but not like it was 28 years ago either...
"I got a pocket full of quarters, and I'm headed to the arcade. I don't have a lot of money, but I'm bringing ev'rything I made. I've got a callus on my finger, and my shoulder's hurting too. I'm gonna eat them all up, just as soon as they turn blue." -Pac-Man Fever by Buckner & Garcia
Rocky III gave us Mr. T, Hulk Hogan, and The Eye of the Tiger and Michael Jackson gave us Thriller which would give us the Thriller video in 1983..."Thriller's on!!!" would be heard around the block, bikes would be abandoned in the yard or driveway, Wendy's french fries would be left on the kitchen table to get cold, bathtubs would overrun with water and North America would take a break from what-ever and be mesmerized. He also teamed up with Paul McCartney with "Ebony and Ivory".

E.T. scared me as he ran away from Eliot in the back yard making that horrible alien scream and then made me laugh, cry and want to fly on my BMX bike. And speaking of being scared...Poltergeist should not have come on during the morning and afternoon hours during the summer with no adult supervision...."There here"...OK I must move on...

Chic-fil-Awesome could and should go GLOBAL
What if Chic-fil-a went global, or at least expanded to Khon Kaen, Thailand? What if on the Chic-fil-A restaurant locater page there was a country tab? What if in doing so, they took a great business to the ends of the earth with a great platform to declare the gospel to other folks in the industry by being a great company, building relationships and sharing life? It could be done! It's time for that Christian sandwich to go great commission....OK chicken sandwich, but you know what I'm sayin'. Are their any takers in the Chic-fil-A fraternity? I am sure this has been thought of before, but what's the delay? The resources, operators, and employees are awesome...not to mention the Chicken sandwich. The goal would not be to make all the money that I believe would be made, but to make a global difference by having a business presence in the local communities all over the world. I know Truett believes Proverbs 22:1, it's on his home page,
"A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold."
I think Chic-fil-A could have a global good name and exalt the Name that is above all names in doing so.
I mean come on, Sizzler is in Thailand...do you remember that place? Much could be learned from KFC and McDonald's and Pizza Hut.
Yes, much of this desire began selfishly as I settle for KFC's spicy drum sticks...that are good. But as I longed for Truett's sandwich I began to think about how well they could actually do in so many ways.
I know the hot-brown and pot pie may never make it out of the country due to airport security and health codes of other nations, but the trademark sandwich and lemonade could and I submit that it should.
The cows are not so cute here and rumor has it they are afraid of heights but they need the work and want to live too.
What are the people doing in the picture below you ask? They are waiting for Chic-fil-a to go global and bring them some Chic-fil-awesome.
Leaders Who Last
In his book, Leaders Who Last, 70 year old Dave Kraft shares his past and current leadership practices. He clearly unpacks the following quote in a very helpful and encouraging way....
"The successful leader is a humble, God-dependent, team-playing servant of God with the vision, calling, gifts, and abilities to bring others into the race"
Here are some of the thoughts that kept pushing me wanting to read and invest more into this book:
"Priorities are like the banks of a river. They protect the river of a person's passion and purpose so that his or her energy is not dissipated all over the landscape."
"If priorities protect my purpose and passion, then pacing prolongs it."
"A leader is a person who is dissatisfied with the way things are. He has a God-given burden, a vision, and a call to see something different. He wants to see something change, to build a new future."
"A vision is usually birthed in isolation, but it is most effectively communicated and implemented in community."
"A truly effective leader operates in a network of supportive and complementary relationships."
"A leader influences many by investing in a few and letting those few influence the rest."
Two of the bents that Kraft takes that is missing in so many leadership books is the need to spend time with the right people as we focus on training leaders and 2. the gifting and calling of spiritual leaders.
I recommend this book to all my Campus Outreach staff family...Kraft was a Navigator, and as you know we are highly influenced by them....so much so I am surprised we have not been charged with idea plagiarism.
I also recommend this book to all youth pastors and pastors, especially when it comes to equipping and empowering the right people to best help you live out your God given vision for all the people.
Again, I find it best to just let Mark Driscoll and Dave Kraft summarize the book in the video below.
What I saw two months ago…

On my way to the top of a hill to take pictures of the smoke from the town hall in Khon Kaen being burned down by protesters, I found myself at a new protest spot across the street from the front of the gates of Khon Kaen University. The Redshirts were arriving to set a government building on fire. I felt I should leave but decided to stay...at least for a few minutes. The entire building was gutted by fire and a couple of cars were set ablaze too.
Just so you know, it is peaceful here now, as in no current protests, and we do not feel threatened. Even during the protests we knew that it had nothing to do with us, however we maintained distance....until this occurrence. (sorry iphone users, the slideshow uses flash.

“But I have this against you…”
The other day I posted the following thought on Twitter:
It is possible to follow the directives of Jesus faithfully yet fail to worship him. Matthew 28:16-17
My team-mate and friend John Hunt posted Revelation 2:2-4 on FB in agreement and response.
"I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first." Revelation 2:2-4
This verse got my wheels turning....what do you think? Here was my addition to the thought.
That verse fits great here. I was looking for verses like this recently as some of the guys and I were talking about verses like the one you posted. I have been reading about the place for warnings in the believers' life and how God uses them to preserve us...really amazing concept when taking into consideration the doctrines of grace, sin, the attributes of God, the work of the Spirit in our lives and our constant call to faith and repentance. God lovingly pushes us towards repentance of our works and non-works through his warnings, biblical narratives and Spirit. Works only leaves us with the illusion of a great scorecard that points to self and in the end is worthless showing us that we are without love and Jesus. Faith and repentance do not leave us neutral in our hearts, they leave us filled with faith, hope and LOVE! In other words, faith and repentance do not just remove the ugliness of us leaving us clean, but God uses warnings...and in his kindness leads us to repentance...showing us that we are filled with him by him, we are his... which moves us towards an enduring life of love and good deeds.
As we know, faith and repentance in the life of a true believer is not constantly asking God to give us salvation but it is a life filled with knowing and loving that we are saved(in all it's tenses) which helps us to constantly turn from ourselves to him.
I imagine myself sitting with friends and family and hearing Jesus say this:
“‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Revelation 2:2-4
Do I grumble, get angry demanding my rights to what I think I have earned...or do I gasp in the realization that I have been abandoning the love I had for him at first and run to him like Peter and weep as I cling to him? A new creation heart will always cling to it's creator, sometimes quickly sometimes not so quickly.
Isn't that the heart's desire of idols? To capture our love away?
May we not get so caught up in good deeds that we miss our good God and fail to love and worship him!
